Navigate Your Journey with Triple A Cycle Coaching

Training Tips

We’ve pooled our collective wisdom and experience and added a sprinkle of fun to help you level up your training game.

Whether you’re gunning for a podium finish or just want to beat your personal best, these tips will keep you on the right track. Remember, the journey is just as important as the destination, so enjoy the ride and keep pushing those pedals!

Ready to pedal like a pro? Let’s roll!

Consistency is King
Consistency beats intensity. It’s not about how hard you can go on one ride; it’s about showing up day after day. Make cycling a regular part of your routine, even if it’s just a short ride. The cumulative effect will keep you at peak performance. Think of it as a steady drip filling a bucket—eventually, that bucket overflows with awesome fitness.

Embrace the Pain Cave (But Don’t Move In)
No pain, no gain—but also no brains, no gains. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is your ticket to speed, but too much can leave you overcooked. Balance those lung-busting intervals with easy rides. Your legs will thank you, and you’ll still be ready to crush those sprints.

Fuel Like a Champion
You can’t outrun a bad diet, and you certainly can’t out-pedal one. Eat clean, eat enough, and eat at the right times. Carbs before your ride, protein after, and a balance of nutrients all day long will keep you riding strong. And yes, treat yourself to that occasional post-ride donut—you’ve earned it!

Recovery is Not a Dirty Word
Recovery days are training days. Muscles grow stronger during rest, not during work. Incorporate active recovery days into your plan, with light spins or even—gasp—no riding at all. Your body will rebound stronger, and you’ll be raring to go for your next big effort.

Master the Art of the Sufferfest
The mental game is more than half the battle. Develop mental toughness by embracing the suck on hard days. Visualize success, break long rides into chunks, and remember why you love the sport. When the going gets tough, the tough get pedalling.

Cadence is Your Superpower
Spin to win. A higher cadence (90-100 RPM) is more efficient than grinding away in a big gear. It saves your legs for the long haul and keeps fatigue at bay. Practice riding at different cadences to find your sweet spot, and you’ll be spinning circles around your competition.

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
Water is your best friend, and electrolytes are the life of the party. Dehydration can sneak up on you and derail your performance. Drink regularly during your rides and replenish electrolytes on longer efforts. A well-hydrated cyclist is a fast cyclist.

Go Long and Slow to Build Endurance
Endurance rides are the foundation of your cycling house. Slow and steady rides improve your aerobic capacity, allowing you to ride longer and stronger. These rides might seem boring, but they’re your secret weapon on race day when others are fading.

Climb Like a Mountain Goat
Hills build character—and legs. Make friends with your local climbs, and practise different climbing techniques, whether it’s staying seated or getting out of the saddle. Embrace the burn, and soon you’ll be flying up those hills with a smile (or at least a determined grimace).

Keep It Fun and Fresh
Cycling should be a joy, not a chore. Mix up your routes, ride with friends, and try new challenges like gravel rides or time trials. Switching things up prevents burnout and keeps the excitement alive. After all, if you’re not having fun, what’s the point?
